Why was Gemara Berura developed?

The learning method and the program were developed in response to the difficulties involved in learning and teaching Gemara in the classroom. The program is not designed to replace the teacher but to supply him with computerized tools and materials to make the sugiya as clear as possible. The tools enable the teacher to spend more time on class discussions, on the implications and on applications of the sugiya. In many classrooms so much time has to be spent on decoding the text that pupils (and teachers!) often lack the energy to study the deeper significance of the content.
